Auction Highlights

VAMquest Auction #33 is a VAM collector’s dream. Why? Looking back, I remember putting together my own VAM collection in the 1980’s. And I know the excitement that would have been generated by an auction with an array of attributed rarities like this. But it never happened.

Indeed, this sale offers a truly amazing selection of seldom-seen varieties in hard-to-find grades. And premium holders abound. In fact, more than half the sale is in expensive PCGS holders which already list the VAM numbers on the label. (For those who don’t know, that usually adds an additional $24 to the cost of the slab!)

But it’s not the holders and the slabbing costs that are most important here - it’s the coins, themselves. So, feast your eyes on this month’s auction highlights:

PCGS Interviews Jeff Oxman and Ash Harrison
At the February Long Beach Expo, a film crew for PCGS interviewed Jeff Oxman, founding President of the Society of Silver Dollar Collectors, and Ash Harrison, current President of the SSDC. The idea was to record a quick overview of VAM collecting, and in the process, focus on some of the books and publications that have contributed to its expanding collector-base. Special thanks go to Logan McKechnie, whose VAM table was used as the location for the filming. All this was a precursor to the PCGS Invitational Show in Las Vegas the following month, where Jeff was invited to give a presentation with Mike Faraone, Grader and Variety Attributor for PCGS, spotlighting the Hit List 40 Morgan dollar varieties.
