| Lot #32004 1878 7/8-TF VAM 44 PCI MS61PL | |
| Description: It would have to be a spectacular variety for us to make an exception to our consignment rules and allow a PCI-holdered coin into one of our Premier Auctions. But how could we refuse the “King of VAMs!” The 1878-P VAM 44 is at or near the top of every VAM collector’s Want List, and this one is
labeled MS61PL. For top-end specialists, the big question would be whether this specimen would cross over to a PCGS holder. If it does, it's worth a king's ransom. If not, $6500 might turn out to be an excellent price, anyway, given the values listed in current price guides. The fact is this: there is considerable wispy contact on the surfaces, which brought the grade down to MS61PL for PCI, and this feature might well be a stumbling block at PCGS. That said, a legendary variety like this is wildly popular, and after all, how many collectors own one! |
| Value Information: The newly released July 2010 VAMVIEW Pricing Index lists the value of an 1878 7/8TF VAM 44 in AU at $8500 and MS60 at $15,000. |
